I do have medication but don't want to stress the fish, I want to do it the natural way. Aside from checking their looks, also check on their behaviour and eating habits.
And yes, this is a far better method than using meds. I'd say a month is ideal, with 3 weeks being the minimum. I'm currently going through an experience where my fish in quarantine did not show symptoms of gill flukes for two weeks. I've learned two weeks isn't long enough for some things to manifest, especially parasitic conditions.
Click to expand I think both comments here are correct. The weeks comment may be preference, overzealousness, or a reference to specific fish. I know with dwarf gourami for example 4 weeks would be considered by many as insufficient and I believe there are people on this forum that advocate up to 6 months quarantine - due to the known issues of various diseases.
Thanks for the answer nice to know that it's only 3 weeks some other guy told me it was 6 to 7 weeks that's a long time, is it a bad thing to put my quarantine tank next to my Aquarium, my apartment is very small, if I separate the net the cleaner the substrates cleaner everything so they doesn't touch each other at any point, would it be okay?
Or can be next to eachother just be careful there is no transfer of water. That is normal guppy behavior. I quarantine 5 weeks 3.
Thanks for the answer Olso I know Honey gourami needs densely planted tank , is my main tank good enough for them, ore do I need more plants? Thanks just what I needed a natural way. How much salt do you put in? Should I go for plastic plants or real plants, can real plants tolerate salt? What of your plants how are they taken it? Hello again Attached is a photo of a tank I kept for plants.
They seem to like a teaspoon or so. I see looks good, salt it will be, how often should I do it, once a week? Quarantine is all about reducing stress and allowing adjustment before introducing fish as well as preventing introduction of disease. From a practical standpoint 2 weeks usually gives enough time for diseases to evidence themselves. A full month is the safest option and since most fish are relatively juvenile when you acquire them it give them an extra month to mature before introducing them.
Some folks choose to sequester longer and I won't say that's a bad idea, but you want to have your new fish on display and introduced to main tank within a reasonable amount of time. Ok a month it will be, thank you for the good information. Here is a video of it.
No I took 1 liter af bio media from my main tank, where there has been a cycled, and the guppy is there because it's being chased by the others guppys, so I have to return her to the store tomorrow, whit the 1 Catfish Dwarf suckers I have, the Catfish Dwarf suckers is to difficult to feed, and they are dying like flies, most likely because it's the new tank.
Olso do you have to quarantine Amano Shrimp if you don't have in any others Shrimp? Chris - you have a couple things going on here. Not sure what you mean by 1 liter if bio media, is this water or did you take filter material sponge, bio balls , etc? If you intend to keep more delicate and disease-prone species such as Discus or certain species of marine fish especially if they are to be added to a reef tank where medication is challenging , then a quarantine period might be advisable, even if they are from your regular store.
If you have had a tank established without addition of livestock for an extended period of time years or more , then it is definitely a good idea to quarantine any new animals.
Your tank will have been isolated from many pathogens and your pets' immunity will have been shaped by the tank conditions. The addition of new fish brings new microbial challenges and your native initial population could suffer. There are many different methods of quarantine and to list them all would take considerable time.
The basics, however, are to isolate the new fish in a different tank to your main display BUT sharing the same water parameters. Alternatively, you can keep an extra box filter running in an established tank, ready to move to a quarantine tank when needed. I did not. I did, however, suggest to my brother that he do a series of partial water changes over the course of the next week to reduce any free-swimming parasites that might be in the water.
As I write this, several weeks have passed and so far neither the new fish nor the originals are showing any signs of a problem. So my nephew could well be lucky. But I also know that good luck rarely lasts forever, and if Ben is serious about fishkeeping, which he seems to be, there will be many finned additions to his collection in the years to come.
